Atlantic Rim/East Coast History

Containing twelve of the original thirteen British colonies in America, the East Coast of the United States holds great historical significance. As the birth place of the modern United States the East Coast was the first stop for almost all colonisers from England who made the intrepid journey across the Atlantic Ocean. With the sea providing such an important lifeline for the new explorers they chose to settle as close to bays and river mouths as possible. This gave birth to cities such as New York, Jacksonville and Annapolis.

The East Coast’s connection to the 1775 – 1783 War of Independence is also deeply engrained with Philadelphia, Baltimore and Williamsburg playing key roles in the revolutionary movement and eventual continental American victory over the British. Historical sites such as Yorktown, are dotted throughout the Atlantic Rim and are yours to explore.

The East Coast also played host to many key events during the American Civil War of 1861 – 1865, with Richmond, as the Confederate Capital, often the target of huge campaigns by Unionist troops. Maryland was also the location of the first bloodshed of the Civil War during the Baltimore riot of 1861,whilst the first shot of the war was fired at Charleston, South Carolina. Of course, the events that took place within the Atlantic Rim across both the War of Independence and American Civil War are plentiful, varied and impossible to list here.

It’s also important to remember that the history of the East Coast isn’t just limited to warfare. With the political history of Washington, D.C, the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and the development of equal rights based on race in Baltimore there is plenty more to discover on America’s Atlantic Rim. Our East Coast tours are the perfect opportunity to lose yourself in travelling through some of the most monumental moments in US history.
