The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is situated along the secluded Makena coastline, at the foot of Haleakala and it is little wonder that immediately upon entering the hotel grounds, you are struck by a sense of tranquillity and serene beauty. All rooms open to a central courtyard featuring immaculate Japanese gardens and mesmerizing koi ponds with a picturesque backdrop of tropical shrubs, trees and rocks.

Each of the 310 guest rooms are well appointed and feature traditional island décor. The rooms have one double or two single beds, private bath, shower and wc, air conditioning, fridge, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, in-room safe (nominal fee), telephone, radio and colour cable TV. A highlight of each room is the private balcony or lanai which looks out onto the spectacular ocean.

Dining is a genuine pleasure at the Makena Beach, where the Molokini Bar & Grille is open for dinner each night, one of the best hotel restaurants on Maui’. This upscale eatery specialises in seafood, steaks and game, all created with delicious originality. Also of note is the hotel’s other dinner restaurant, ‘Hakone’, offering a delightful fusion of menus, with traditional Japanese fare of dishes such as Suriyake and Sushi platters may be complemented by dishes containing more typically Hawaiian ingredients, providing a unique blend of tastes. For the casual dining experience, the Cappuccino Corner affords an outdoor venue for breakfast, whilst the ‘Makena Clubhouse Restaurant’ provides light lunches and after 4pm, pupus (appetisers) and cocktails, all overlooking the 10th hole of the Makena South Golf Course. If you really fancy a treat, why not pay a visit to the Sunday Champagne Brunch, which has won the ‘Best Brunch on Maui’ award for six years running!

The ‘Molokini Lounge’ will ply you with refreshing sunset cocktails and ‘nibbles’, to the accompaniment of a nightly Hula show whilst for those who prefer to soak up every drop of Maui sunshine, the poolside snack bar can provide a most relaxing option. Alternatively, if you wish to experience true Hawaii, why not book the nearby Maui Sunset Luau, where each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday you can partake in this most traditional of island festivities?

There are two swimming pools at the Makena Beach, including one for children, as well as two whirlpools. Golfers can enjoy the 18-hole golf course in quite spectacular settings, whilst those who prefer tennis will have use of the property’s six ‘Plexipave’ courts. Other outdoor activities include volleyball, croquet, shuffleboard, badminton and a full fitness centre. On the beach, apart from just gazing at the endless ocean stretched before you, snorkelling, scuba instruction, sailboarding and, in season, whale watching, are also available. For the children, the ‘Makena Keiki Club’ hosts a range of activities for 5-12 year olds – costs are available on request.
