The Farm by the River B & B with Stables recognized as Earth-friendly business
NORTH CONWAY — The N.H. Lodging & Restaurant Association’s Sustainable Lodging Program is pleased to announce that The Farm by the River in North Conway has joined the N.H. Sustainable Lodging Program as an Environmental Partner.
The Farm by the River joins 22 other lodging facilities in the White Mountains, continually evaluating their operations for more environmentally-sensitive Means of providing superior service to their guests. Michelle Veasey, program manager for the N.H. Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program, commented “The inn has obviously been actively involved in environmental stewardship for some time, coming close to qualifying for Environmental Champion status in many areas of the program.” The N.H. Sustainable Lodging Program asks that applicants commit to environmental actions in five areas: energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, hazardous waste reduction and education.
The Farm by the River has installed energy-efficient interior and exterior lighting, is replacing appliances with Energy Star models as needed, and has implemented energy audit maintenance plans to conserve energy. Water and energy use is reduced by offering guests the option to reuse towels and linens, and through the installation of low-flow toilets and landscaping that includes many native plants, which require less water, and a watering plan that is limited to the early-morning hours. Many efforts have been made to reduce waste, including recycling, providing complimentary newspapers on request only, purchasing supplies in bulk and reusing old linens as cleaning rags. The have reduced their generation of hazardous waste by eliminating the use of pesticides, reducing their use of chlorine and by participating in hazardous waste collection.
All employees are educated on the property’s environmentalprograms and encouraged, along with guests, to provide suggestions and feedback. Veasey says “The implementation of these programs in lodging properties across the state results in dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants from power sources. We are thrilled with the efforts of The Farm by the River and are proud that so many businesses in New Hampshire’s hospitality sector are responding to the environmental challenges we face with creative solutions.”
