Self-drive tour


DAY 1. Boston. Arrive Boston. This evening, enjoy one of Boston’s many restaurants, take in a show in Boston’s theater district or stroll through lively Quincy Marketplace.
DAY 2. Boston – Portland (approx.95 miles). Travel north to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a working port since colonial days and a treasure trove of historical offerings. Visit Strawbery Banke, a collection of 42 buildings reflecting four centuries of architectural and social change in one of America’s oldest neighborhoods, or take advantage of the many shops and restaurants in this historic seaport community. Then continue up the coast to Maine. In Ogunquit take a leisurely walk along the Marginal Way, a magnificent mile-long footpath which follows the edge of the Atlantic atop rugged cliffs, or stroll amidst the fine shops and galleries of Perkins Cove. Continue into South Portland for the night.
DAY 3. Portland – North Conway, NH (approx. 65 miles). Spend the morning exploring Portland’s historic buildings, Old Port Exchange and famous light houses before traveling through Maine’s picturesque lakes region and into North Conway, NH, a treasure trove of outlet shops. Overnight in North Conway.
DAY 4. North Conway – Killington/Rutland, VT (approx.146 miles).
Venture along Franconia Notch and see natural wonders such as Indian Head, the Flume Gorge, or take a tram to the summit of Cannon Mountain for breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Scenic routes and covered bridges will take you into Vermont, the Green Mountain State. Visit Woodstock, a quintessential New England village replete with the charms of Vermont. Stay near Killington in Rutland for the overnight.
DAY 5. Killington – Williamstown – Stockbridge – Lenox, MA (approx.130 miles). Head south through winding country roads into Massachusetts. Take time in Williamstown to explore this famous college community and its noted Clark Art Institute. See Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony’s summer home in Lenox and visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, which houses his paintings of America past. Highlights include paintings from Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers. Overnight in Lenox.
DAY 6. Lenox – Sturbridge – Hyannis (150 miles). Head east towards
Cape Cod. En route, visit Old Sturbridge village, and learn the history of 19th c. rural New England at this outdoor living history museum. Continue into Plymouth, “America’s hometown” to see Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II, an exact replica of the ship that carried the Pilgrims to the New World. Then cross the Cape Cod Canal to a world of charm and beauty. Overnight for the next 2 nights in Hyannis on Cape Cod.
DAY 7. Hyannis – Provincetown – Hyannis (140 miles). Today drive along the Cape Cod National Seashore to explore lighthouses, quaint coastal communities, and natural scenic beauty. Visit the lively artist colony of Provincetown where you may choose to take a whale watch, or just lay on one of the Cape’s many sandy beaches. The Cape is a great place to enjoy a traditional Lobsterbake dinner; lobster, steamers, corn-on-the-cob and all the trimmings!
DAY 8. Hyannis – Boston (70 miles). Morning to relax on the Cape or return to Boston for some last minute shopping before departing.
